Fundamentación
The Hematology course corresponds to the 7th level of the Chemistry, Biology and Pharmacy bachelor’s degree. As an accredited bachelor, it is imperative for the students to be prepared in all the essential knowledge and applicative areas.
Hematology is part of the clinical laboratory science and is one of the most important working areas and specialist formation for the students.
In this course the students would be able to:
- Acquire biochemistry and biology knowledge related to blood components and their functions, as well as some cell alterations that would yield to pathologies.
- Have sufficient knowledge to communicate experiments in an oral and written manner (supported by self-learning, information management and teamwork) to obtain specific information in decision making. They also will be able to observe the functioning of technical and scientific equipment, used in the performance of hematologic tests, which would be helpful in processing patient’s biological specimens to know their physiological condition.
- Acquire the ability to work in the scientific laboratory diagnostic area, as well in the health preventing area, being capable of integrate the patient whole medical history with the laboratory results.
- Develop environmental care conscience with the correct biological hazard disposal and self-care by the correct activation and disposal of needles used in blood drawing procedures.
- Follow a healthy and balanced diet, after studying and understanding the characteristics of the nutrient deficiency anemia,
- Review scientific and relevant information, selecting reports which would be useful in the acquisition of knowledge in the specific subjects of the hematology course. The students will also study the international guidelines regarding diagnostic criteria and treatment protocols.
Competencia general
The students will apply basic hematology techniques and theory concepts to perform, with a standard level of skill, to obtain high quality laboratory samples and their results, as well as to gather data, analyze and recognize most of the pathologies present in routine biological samples complying with the corresponding Mexican regulation.

Metodología de trabajo
Within the asynchronous sessions, we will be working with the virtual classroom provided by the SUME. This virtual classroom is organized in 4 sections. Each section contains presentations with the summarized information, together with some videos, questionaries, and activities, with scheduled due dates.
The questionaries and activities will evaluate the learning and comprehension of each student. The platform will be configurated for each student to follow the grades obtained in each questionary and activity, as well as the feedback of each grade obtained.
The questionaries will be related with the information regarding hematology concepts.
The activities will be related with the hematology laboratory techniques.
For every pathology subject, each student will prepare a study case considering the following points:
- Patient age and sex (considering the specific hematologic pathology)
- Hemoglobin, leukocytes, platelets values (according to the hematologic pathology)
- At least 5 parameters to obtain a diagnostic.
- Complete treatment.
- Patient prognostic considering all the characteristics presented in the study case.
This study case will be prerecorded and uploaded to the virtual classroom, and the rest of the students will evaluate every presentation following the previous 5 points.
For the presentation and the evaluation, the workshop tool in the virtual classroom will be used. We also will be working with the teams platform, to have synchronous question and answer sessions weekly.
Criterios de evaluación
The evaluation is summative, all the activities will be considered and will have the following ponderation:
Evidencia | Ponderación |

Partial exams | 25% |
Questionaries | 25% |
Laboratory activities | 25% |
Study case exposition | 15% |
Study case evaluation | 10% |
